Nigerian MTN subscribers have taken to social media to express their anger over the increase in data and bundle prices by one of Africa’s largest telecommunications providers.

Nigerians awoke to a 15 GB data bundle priced from N2,000 to N6,000, an amount that is unsuitable for citizens given the country’s inflation and poor economic stability.

Reacting to the increase, an X handle @justtderrick wrote “MTN really decided to do us dirty fr….

Even my 3k for 20GB via *121# is gone 

*121# is down completely, na this one pain me pass

Only *567# is available: 2GB for 500

Dear @MTNNG what’s going on??”

@gbolahan2211 wrote”Imagine MTN @MTNNG increasing their tariff 15gb overnight without prior notice to customers. This is no way to do things man. I even sent them a message and they told me cause they wanna serve me better. Damn!!”

@official_GZU also wrote “MTN increasing the cost of its 15gb data subscription from 2k to 6k is a significant price hike, and it reflects the true economic and business realities rather than just a random decision.

Complaining Won’t Change Anything because Telecom operators have to operate within a profit-driven system. Complaints on social media or elsewhere won’t reverse the decision because the price increase is tied to economic factors beyond your control. Businesses don’t lower prices due to outrage; they do so when Inflation and Currency Devaluation, market forces, competition, or policies make it necessary.

Rather than just complaining, look for data alternatives and increase your income”

@khanstillday called for the boycott of MTN citing alleged sabotage during the #endsars protest in the country. He said “I think it’s high time we boycotted MTN. Their network is terrible, and their data plans are a rip-off. the 15GB package doesn’t even last three days.

During the protest, they deliberately sabotaged their own network to prevent it from happening.”

@Ebukameansgreat said “Paying 6k for 15gb is Equivalent of paying 120m for Enzo Fernandez.

No sensible person is doing that.”

@odogwu_nomso wrote “Some of you will still subscribe this 15GB for 6k and still come and defend the Politicians that put us in this Mess, it will not be well will your Generation….”

While Nigerians continue to fume and analyze what the increase of data subscriptions means to the common man, many have suggested for migration to Airtel which has so far, served Nigerians better with its services.

Meanwhile, this price adjustment marks the second such increase from MTN in the past year, as the company continues to navigate a challenging economic landscape while striving to maintain its market leadership in the face of competition from other major players in the telecommunications sector.

While MTN has introduced data-saving features and rolled out promotions in the past to ease the impact of price increases on its users, it remains to be seen how these new rates will affect its customer base in the long term.
