Police Arrest One for Attacking and Killing Vigilante Member in Emir Sanusi’s Entourage

20-year-old Usman Sagiru, of Sharifai Quarters, has been arrested by the Kano State Police Command in connection with the alleged killing and attack on vigilante members that occurred in the entourage of Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II after Eid prayers on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at about 12:40pm.

According to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer on Monday, while dispersing from the Eid praying ground, Usman Sagiru and others, now at large, allegedly stabbed Surajo Rabiu, a vigilante member from Sabon Titi Jaba Quarters who later died from injuries.

Another vigilante member, Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital Kano while they were providing a shield for Emir Sanusi.

While the Command has commenced an investigation into the incident and extended an invitation to Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku for interrogation, it reiterates its ban on all forms of Durbar and warns that anyone found engaging in such activities will be dealt with decisively.

Also, all forms of thuggery (Daba) activities will not be tolerated. Whoever engages in any act or conduct that may likely cause a breach of peace or breakdown of law and order will be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.

It also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all.

Recall that the power struggle between Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, and Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, is still ongoing following controversial court rulings.

In 2020, Sanusi was controversially dethroned by the Kano State government, led by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The dethronement led to tensions within the Emirate, with Sanusi’s supporters viewing the action as politically motivated. Sanusi, a former central bank governor, had been a vocal critic of the state government and the governor himself, which many saw as the catalyst for his removal.

Following Sanusi’s removal, Aminu Ado Bayero, a former Emir of Bichi (one of the newly created emirates in Kano), was appointed the Emir of Kano. This sparked further rivalry and division within the Emirate, with supporters of both Sanusi and Bayero showing loyalty to their respective figures.
