NSIB Confirms Cessna 172 Accident at Owerri Airport, Investigation Underway

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed an aircraft accident involving a Cessna 172 operated by Skypower Express at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State.

The incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ASR, was en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an emergency and diverted to Owerri.

According to NSIB, the aircraft crashed in the approach area while attempting to land on Runway 17. Four occupants were on board at the time of the accident. No fatalities were recorded, though the occupants were reportedly taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Airport emergency services were immediately activated and responded promptly to the scene, securing the area. Authorities confirmed that there was no post-crash fire, and flight operations at the airport were not disrupted, as the runway remained operational throughout the incident.

In a statement, the NSIB said it has commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and assured the public that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
