2027 Elections: We Are Competing With Thieves, Atiku Says

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the ruling political class of stealing the 2023 election and worsening Nigeria’s economic hardship.

Atiku, speaking ahead of the 2027 general elections, said Nigerians were now “competing with thieves,” alleging that those who “stole the election” had also “stolen the economy.”

He criticised the removal of the fuel subsidy, arguing that the policy had pushed more Nigerians into poverty and failed to prioritise citizens’ welfare.

“The removal of the subsidy has driven more Nigerians into poverty than at any other time in the history of this country, and the fundamental responsibility of the government is the welfare of the citizens,” Atiku said.

The former Vice President also clarified his position on fuel subsidy following comments attributed to his aide, Paul Ibe, which he said did not reflect his policy.

Atiku stated categorically that he would restore the subsidy if elected president, stressing that Nigeria had sufficient resources to provide for the wetizecitizens’ welfaret me make it clear that my aide, Paul Ibe, was not speaking with my authority when he made remarks that contradict my policy on subsidy removal,” he said.

He further promised to prioritise national security and take steps to secure the country if elected in 2027.

“We are competing against thieves: they stole the election, and now they are stealing from the economy,” Atiku added.
