Breaking! Court Remands Nnachi Divine Mark Idume over Alleged False Viral Publication Against Former Abia Governor Senator T.A. Orji
The Chief Magistrate Court, Umuahia, today took a significant step in the enforcement of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2025 (as amended) in Charge No. U/306C/2026, between the Commissioner of Police and Nnachi Divine Mark Idume.

The Defendant published and circulated a sensational story on social media claiming that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had discovered US$5 billion, alleged pre written future election results, ₦1 trillion worth of gold necklaces, and over 200 exotic vehicles during a purported raid at the Umuahia residence of former Abia State Governor, Chief T. A. Orji.
According to the prosecution, these allegations were entirely false, unverified, and deliberately published to mislead members of the public, generate online traffic, and damage the reputation of the person concerned.
Following the Defendant’s arraignment, the Court ordered that he be remanded at the Afara Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. Matter was adjourned to 27 August 2027.

The proceedings underscore the increasing determination of law enforcement agencies and the courts to enforce the provisions of the Cybercrimes Act against the deliberate dissemination of false information through digital platforms.
The legislation seeks to address the growing menace of misinformation, fake news, and malicious online publications capable of causing reputational harm, inciting public disorder, or undermining public confidence in institutions.
The court by this singular action, has inadvertently put on notice, others hiding under the guise of freedom of expression, to willfully, albeit in the most malicious and malignant manner, damage the reputation of unsuspecting citizens, before right thinking members of the public.
