Following the killing of a motorist today by men of the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps, the Abia State Governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter.
According to the Commissioner of information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu who pleaded with the public to remain calm as justice will be served.
The Governor further commiserated with the family of the deceased and advised security agencies to follow rules regarding the use of firearms.
Read the statement, “It was with rude shock that we received the sad news of yet another alleged extra-judicial killing of one of our citizens by an arm bearing security agent at Umuikaa junction, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, and wish to state that we strongly condemn such acts which are now almost becoming a regular occurrence in the State.”
“While we appeal to members of the public to remain calm and not take the laws into their hands, we assure them that no effort will be spared in ensuring that justice is done swiftly. We also strongly urge arm bearing security agents in the state to ensure that they fully follow service guidelines regarding the use of firearms at all times as the state Government will not spare any effort in ensuring full protection of the right to life of our people.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the State Commissioner of Police to immediately apprehend the suspect(s) and fully investigate the circumstances leading to the latest unfortunate incident at Umuikaa junction and ensure that justice is done swiftly.
We commiserate with the family and friends of the deceased and, once again, call on security agents bearing arms to be responsible and follow relevant service rules regarding the use of firearms.”
The motorist was conveying foodstuffs and was shot at Umuikaa junction in Abia State on Wednesday by the members of the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps.
