MultiChoice Announces Shutdown of Showmax Streaming Platform After 11 Years
MultiChoice Group has announced plans to shut down its streaming platform Showmax after 11 years of operation, marking a major shift in the company’s digital strategy.

The company said the decision followed a comprehensive internal review aimed at strengthening its broader digital operations and maintaining long-term sustainability amid increasing competition in the global streaming market.
Showmax, which was launched in 2015 initially in South Africa, expanded over the years to reach audiences across multiple African countries. The platform became one of the continent’s notable home-grown streaming services, offering local and international movies, television series, and original productions.
Despite the announcement, MultiChoice assured subscribers that the service will continue to operate normally for the time being. The company said no immediate action is required from users and promised that further details about the shutdown timeline and transition process will be communicated in advance.
The development comes amid broader corporate changes, including the recent approval of the acquisition of MultiChoice by Canal+.
MultiChoice also stated that customer experience remains a key priority as it navigates the transition.
