In a historic conclave decision, Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost, OSA, has been elected as the new Bishop of Rome, taking the papal name Leo XIV.

This marks the first time in the two-millennia history of the Roman Catholic Church that an American has been chosen as Pope.
Cardinal Prevost, originally from Chicago, Illinois, brings decades of pastoral and theological experience to the papacy, including his recent role as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

His election signals a momentous shift in the global church, reflecting its increasingly diverse and international character.
Appearing at the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with a message of unity and renewal: “With humility and hope, I begin this sacred mission, asking for your prayers as we walk together in faith.”
The conclave followed the death of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday.
