Former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum E. Orji, has called for stronger efforts to protect the rights and promote the welfare, education and empowerment of the girl child.

Orji, in a message marking the International Day of the Girl Child celebrated on October 11, said every girl deserves access to quality education, adequate healthcare, equal opportunities and protection from abuse and discrimination.

He stressed that girls are not merely leaders of the future but important contributors to society’s development today, noting that investing in their education, rights and opportunities would strengthen families, communities and the nation.

The former Speaker also urged society to confront challenges such as child marriage, gender-based violence, discrimination and limited access to education and economic opportunities, which he said continue to hinder girls from reaching their full potential.

Orji reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote girls’ dignity, welfare, and empowerment, while calling for a society where every girl is valued, heard, and allowed to achieve her dreams.

He wished girls across the world a happy International Day of the Girl Child.
