Obi Visits Makinde, Urges FG to Prioritize Critical Sectors

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party has urged the Federal government to prioritize critical areas of the economy, such as education and health, and cut the cost of governance.

Mr Obi said this when he was speaking to journalists on Monday in Ibadan, Oyo State after paying a condolence visit to Governor Seyi Makinde on the recent explosion in the State.

“Elections are over, and governance is the key thing. It’s a matter of sacrifice; elections are over, governance is the key thing, and what is required, for me in particular, is that we need to cut the cost of governance, especially at the federal level.

He added “It is unacceptable the way it is going. We need to prioritize critical areas such as education, health, and pulling people out of poverty.”

While urging every Nigerian to be involved in the global turnaround of the country commiserated with the people of the State and described the explosion at Bodija which killed lots of people as an “unfortunate incident.”

He commended the state government “for responding promptly when the explosion occurred”.

Mr Makinde thanked Mr Obi for the visit, said and said that investigations were still ongoing but assured that the culprits would be brought to book.

“This morning, we received my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, and his team, who visited us in Ibadan to condole with us over the Bodija incident. I thanked them for the visit and for putting politics aside at this time to sympathise with the victims especially those who lost loved ones.”

Governor Makinde had directed structural integrity tests by the Nigerian Society of Engineers on about 230 properties around the site of the explosion; 13 houses within 50 meters of the blast site, 40 houses within 100 meters radius; 122 houses at 200 meters radius, and 53 houses within a 250 meters radius.

Two fatalities were reported in the explosion while over 100 were injured.
