Nine Suspects Arrested in Connection with Murder of Anambra Legislator

The Anambra State Police Command has successfully arrested nine individuals in connection with the murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The Anambra State Police Command has successfully arrested nine individuals in connection with the murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly. Azuka, who represented Onitsha North Constituency 1, was abducted on December 24, 2024, in Onitsha, and his decomposing body was later discovered on the 2nd Niger Bridge on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

A joint operation by the police and state vigilante personnel led to the apprehension of the suspects. During a press briefing on Friday, Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam confirmed the arrests and stated that two pump-action guns were recovered from the suspects. One of the suspects was injured in a gunfight with law enforcement during the operation.

The arrested individuals include 30-year-old Ugochiuwu Onuorah, 20-year-old Ikemefuna Ossai, 27-year-old Ikenna Orugu, 19-year-old Chibuike Obiefuna, 19-year-old Chinonso Olisa, 21-year-old Chinedu Okoli,  25-year-old David Ojini and 20-year-old Peter Sunday, who is noted as the most notorious suspect, with a tattoo reading “No peace 4 d Government” on his chest

Also, Chidiebere Nsowu, a kidnap suspect was arrested in a separate operation.

In addition to the arrests, the police have also neutralized over 100 notorious criminals and dismantled several criminal camps across the state, as part of ongoing efforts to curb violence and criminal activities. Commissioner Itam thanked the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokpun, and Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for their continued support in the fight against crime.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to bring all involved parties to justice.
