Senate Sets Up Committee to Organise National Security Summit

Following the invasion and killing of soldiers in a military camp situated in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, the Nigerian Senate has constituted a planning committee to organise a National Security Summit.

The committee which includes a cross-section of senators from various geopolitical zones, reflecting a broad-based approach to national security deliberations is chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, with Senator Yahaya Abdullahi serving as deputy chairman.

Members of the committee are Senators Ireti Kingibe, Idiat Oluranti, Mpigi Barinada, Babangida Hussaini, Jimoh Ibrahim, Osita Ngwu, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Titus Zam, Isa Jibrin, Ahmad Lawan, Abdulaziz Yaradua, and Gbenga Daniel.

Also appointed to the committee are Senators Austin Akobundu, Buba Shehu Umar, Abdulhamid Malam Madori, Emmanuel Udende, Adams Oshiomhole, and Saliu Afolabi.

The committee has been tasked with organizing a comprehensive summit focused on evaluating the nation’s security architecture and recommending actionable solutions. They are expected to report back to the Senate within two weeks.

On Monday, terrorists attacked the camps of the Nigerian Army, resulting in numerous deaths and kidnappings. In a viral video, the narrator reported that, in addition to burning army trucks and cars, the terrorists also looted the soldiers’ armoury.

“ISWAP has taken over Marte, an unspecified number of soldiers were killed, some captured and many have deserted. They ran towards Dikwa, and are currently at the 24 Task force Brigade, Dikwa. The terrorists also burnt down armoured tanks and made away with arms and ammunition from the base”, said a source
