Orji Kalu Responds to Criticism on Visit to Governor Otti

Orji Uzor Kalu, the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, has addressed criticisms regarding his recent visit to Governor Alex Otti. Kalu described the meeting as private and strategic, aimed at fostering peace and development in Abia State.

“My visit to Governor Alex Otti is very private. As the oldest Governor of Abia State, I have the right to meet with Governor Otti. Our discussion focused on state matters. I am establishing five factories in Igbere that will commence operations within the next year, and for this, I need peace and unity. I am committed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and will work tirelessly for the party’s success in the state and at the federal level,” Kalu stated.

Speaking to journalists at his country home in Igbere on Tuesday, Kalu emphasized that, despite political differences, his priority remains the unity and prosperity of the state. As a dedicated APC member, Kalu asserted that his visit to Governor Otti, a member of the Labour Party, was not politically motivated but centred on economic development. He reiterated his plans to establish five factories in his hometown, which he believes require a collaborative environment.

“I am a senior member of the APC; any suspension from the party would require a decision from the National Executive Committee. We must strive to ensure APC’s success in all regions. Politics is not solely about attracting large crowds; those seeking personal gain often create noise. I have been in business for 40 years and have a proven track record.”

On the state of Nigeria’s economy, Kalu commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to stabilize the economy amidst global inflation and the lingering impacts of COVID-19. He acknowledged that while the economy is fragile, progress is being made, particularly in stabilizing the foreign exchange market and eliminating petroleum subsidies.

“I have spoken seriously about the economy and the need to get it back on track; this is a collective task. At the highest levels, the economy is exhibiting signs of recovery, but it will take time to trickle down. The lasting effects of worldwide inflation and COVID-19 may take years to resolve. I assure you that President Tinubu is working hard to lift people out of poverty. I am not part of the President’s economic team, but I speak as a concerned Nigerian. The President understands the hunger among the populace and is striving to address it.

“We have seen some stabilization in the foreign currency market over the past nine months. Should we rely on subsidies again? No. While we can consider subsidizing food and other essentials, the petroleum subsidies were a significant burden. I believe that within the next two to three years, the economy will stabilize. I recognize that many are struggling; as a producer, I comprehend the manufacturing costs. No President wants to punish the people; rather, every leader aims to alleviate their suffering.”

Kalu expressed optimism that Nigeria’s economy would stabilize within two to three years, even as he acknowledged the hardships faced by citizens.

He also defended his developmental contributions in Abia, particularly in Aba and Umuahia, countering claims that his administration did little to advance the region. “Aba, known as Enyimba City, is recognized throughout Africa. I laid the foundation for that.”

Discussing internal APC matters and recent political developments in Bende Local Government Area owing to his absence at the Renewed Hope Partners organized by the Deputy Speaker last weekend, Kalu downplayed any rift with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, affirming their close relationship. He, however, called for clarity on Benjamin Kalu’s political ambitions.

“If he wishes to run for governor, he should declare it. You cannot be both a holder and a beholder,” Kalu remarked, adding that he has advised his brother against contesting against Benjamin Kalu.

The former governor passionately spoke about the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, including the judiciary and media, despite ongoing criticisms.

“Nation-building is a collective effort, not a short-term endeavour. Our responsibility is to Nigeria and to work for our country. We have made significant progress. Having had the opportunity to visit several African countries, I can affirm that we possess one of the strongest judiciaries on the continent. While our journalism faces criticism, we also have one of the best systems; we express thoughts that others may not dare to write. Overall, we are building a robust democracy, and it requires consistent effort over time.”

Kalu urged APC members to remain focused, emphasizing that with hard work and unity, the party can reclaim leadership positions at both state and federal levels.

“Politics is not about noise. We have the structure, and with the Orji Uzor Kalu movement, we can still achieve remarkable results.”
