The Anambra State Police Command has expressed profound sadness following the accidental death of Police Inspector Okolie Amechi on the evening of June 15, 2025.

According to the police, the tragic incident occurred when Inspector Amechi’s 10-year-old son unknowingly pulled the trigger of his father’s AK-47 rifle, which was loaded.
The shot struck the Inspector in the back, resulting in his immediate injury and subsequent death confirmed by doctors at the hospital. The bullet also grazed the hand of the Inspector’s second child, who is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be responding well.

The police command confirmed the recovery of the rifle and stated that the Inspector’s remains have been deposited in the morgue.
In a statement released on June 16, 2025, the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, extended condolences to the family and friends of the late Inspector Amechi while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured child. The command assured the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
