Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has pledged continued investment in road infrastructure across the state, acknowledging that over 95% of Abia’s 948 roads are in a state of disrepair.

Speaking during a monthly media chat with journalists tagged “Governor Alex Otti Speaks with Abians,” held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Umuahia on Thursday, Governor Otti admitted that the extent of road degradation across the state is vast, making it impossible to tackle all projects simultaneously.

“We can’t work on them all at once,” he said. “But we are working on the inroads in all the Senatorial Districts in the State.”

In response to public concern, the Governor directed the Commissioner for Works to inspect the Amaiyi-Okpo Ihechiowa road to assess its condition and determine necessary interventions. He also stated that the Okpo Ihechiowa primary healthcare might make the next phase of the Project Ekwueme.

“We took a phased approach, one healthcare centre per ward, but had to round it off to 200 health centres to be rehabilitated, leaving over 700 yet to be reconstructed. If the Okpo Ihechiowa primary healthcare centre didn’t make it into the first phase, it will definitely come in the subsequent phases.”

He also noted that work is nearing completion on the Ekeakpara–Osisioma Road, the Arochukwu–Abam Road, the Onuimo–Abia Tower axis and others. He revealed that the Port Harcourt road project is completed and open to road users but will be commissioned at a later date.

The Governor also announced efforts to beautify and resurface the Aba–Owerri Road, saying the goal is to make the entrance into Aba reflect the vision of a modern, developed city. Additionally, Umuahia, the state capital, is receiving infrastructure upgrades to improve access and urban appeal.

Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and economic development through road infrastructure, promising that “no part of the state will be left behind.”
