Unjustified Broader Reform Agenda – Otunba Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo

The recent statement by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, defending the increase in passport fees, unfortunately, falls short of recognising the broader socio-economic realities that many Nigerians are currently facing. While the government may argue that this hike is part of a larger reform agenda aimed at curbing corruption, improving security, and restoring the integrity of the Nigerian passport as a globally recognised document, it seems completely disconnected from the lived experiences of everyday citizens.

First and foremost, the decision to increase passport fees amid widespread economic hardship is perplexing and deeply troubling. Nigerians are grappling with rising costs of living, inadequate healthcare, unemployment, and widespread poverty. At a time when millions of citizens are struggling to afford basic necessities such as food, healthcare, and transportation, imposing additional financial burdens on them for something like a passport, an essential tool for travel and identity verification, seems not only insensitive but also detrimental to the welfare of the people. The increase in passport fees will undoubtedly make it more difficult for many Nigerians, especially those in lower-income brackets, to obtain or renew their passports, further alienating them from global opportunities and the ability to connect with the world.

It is also important to address the government’s claim of a “broader reform agenda” as the justification for this hike. While it is true that reforms in areas such as corruption, security, and government efficiency are crucial, the timing and method of implementing such reforms leave much to be desired. Reform should not come at the expense of the basic rights and well-being of the people. If the government is genuinely committed to fighting corruption, why not focus on addressing the root causes of systemic inefficiencies, such as improving the management of government funds and eliminating wasteful spending? Why place the burden on the average citizen, many of whom are already suffering from economic distress?

Moreover, the question must be asked: why is the government not considering the prevailing economic situation of its citizens when implementing such policies? With inflation soaring, the national debt climbing, and unemployment at alarmingly high levels, the government’s decision to increase passport fees reflects a disturbing lack of empathy and understanding of the daily struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians. Instead of enacting policies that exacerbate the financial strain on citizens, the ruling party should be considering more inclusive solutions that address the root causes of poverty and inequality, as well as creating opportunities for economic growth and development.

Finally, there is a larger question about the APC-led government’s priorities. In a time of rising hunger, widespread unemployment, and economic instability, it is unclear why this government is more focused on hiking fees for travel documents than on addressing the fundamental issues that Nigerians care about: access to quality education, healthcare, jobs, and a better standard of living. The average citizen is looking for policies that offer relief, not additional hardship.

In conclusion, while the government’s stated intentions may be to enhance the integrity of the Nigerian passport, the manner in which these changes are being implemented shows a clear disregard for the economic realities that millions of Nigerians face. The ruling party needs to shift its focus from policies that burden the public to those that prioritise improving the lives of the people, especially in a time when hunger and poverty are widespread.
