Aso Rock Queries AEDC Over Alleged Billing for Unsupplied Electricity

The State House has raised concerns over electricity bills issued by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), alleging that the utility provider is charging for power not supplied to parts of the Presidential Villa.

Permanent Secretary, State House, Temitope Fashedemi, disclosed this while addressing issues surrounding outstanding electricity liabilities and the threat of disconnection.

Fashedemi said the amount currently being demanded by AEDC exceeds what is provided for in the State House budget. According to him, the State House makes monthly payments based on budgetary allocations, but the actual bills presented by AEDC are significantly higher.

“What you see here does not fully address the demands that AEDC is making on us regarding liability,” he said. “From the budget referenced, we work with that amount and pay it every month, but the actual bill is significantly higher.”

He noted that provisions were made in last year’s capital budget to address what he described as “so-called past liabilities.”

However, he expressed concern over discrepancies discovered during internal assessments.
Fashedemi revealed that during recent testing, several transformers serving the State House were found to be billing for electricity that was not supplied.

“We are also feeling a sense of urgency about this cutoff because, during our testing, we found that several transformers in various locations were billing for electricity that was not supplied,” he stated.

He added that the current situation has provided an opportunity for the State House to draw attention to the discrepancies and seek reconciliation of the legacy liabilities being demanded by AEDC.

“We are currently using this period to highlight these issues to them and hopefully reconcile the legacy liabilities they are requesting from us,” he said.
