Onitsha Market Traders Defy Soludo, Insist Sit-at-Home Continues
Traders at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State have reportedly rejected calls by the state government to end the ongoing Monday sit-at-home protest, insisting that the action will persist until the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is released.
Pictures and videos obtained by Newsleverage revealed that the Onitsha Main Market, which was shut for one week last week by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for obeying the sit-at-home order and was reopened on 1st February 2026, was entirely closed with traders nowhere in sight.
In a viral video, traders stated that they have yet to see soldiers who would protect them from the threats of sit-at-home enforcers. The traders complained bitterly about the few soldiers stationed in the market, who harass traders.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government has repeatedly expressed concern about the economic impact of the sit-at-home order, urging traders and residents to resume normal activities while promising to engage the federal authorities through lawful means.
