Police Demote Sergeant, Reprimand Inspectors Over Viral Assault Video
The Imo State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against three officers involved in a viral incident showing the assault of a civilian along the Owerri–Aba Road.
The Imo State Police Command has taken disciplinary action against three officers involved in a viral incident showing the assault of a civilian along the Owerri–Aba Road.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, the officers, Inspector Ofem Obongha, Inspector Obinna Okereke, and Sergeant Anayo Ekezie, all attached to the Safer Highway Unit, were identified following a review of the disturbing footage.
An orderly room trial was conducted in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s internal disciplinary procedures. Sergeant Anayo Ekezie, found guilty of using a smoke gunner during the assault, has been demoted to the rank of Corporal. Inspectors Obongha and Okereke were issued severe reprimands for failing to exercise supervisory control.


The Command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on police misconduct and called on members of the public to report similar incidents to the Complaints Response Unit, X-Squad Unit, or via hotlines 08033424051 and 08148024755.
“The Command is committed to transparency, professionalism, and the protection of citizens’ rights,” the statement concluded.
