Opinion: In 2027, Ikwuano/Umuahia Will Choose Performance Over Propaganda – Onukwuo

Politics is a contest of ideas, records and vision, not a competition in character assassination. As the race for the 2027 House of Representatives seat for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency gathers momentum, one thing has become increasingly evident: some politicians and their supporters appear more interested in attacking opponents than defending their own performance.

Recent commentaries from supporters of Hon. Obi Aguocha have once again placed Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji at the centre of political debate. While criticism is an essential part of democracy, it should never replace accountability. The people of Ikwuano/Umuahia deserve more than lengthy political attacks—they deserve answers.

The fundamental question remains: what tangible legacy has the current representation delivered to the constituency?

For many residents, the issues remain the same—employment opportunities for young people, improved healthcare, quality roads, rural development, access to clean water and greater federal presence. These are the issues that should dominate political conversations, not endless exchanges of accusations.

In my opinion, if an elected representative has performed exceptionally well, that performance should speak louder than any press release. Development is visible. Communities can point to completed projects. Young people can testify to empowerment programmes. Constituents can identify the impact of quality representation.

This is why the persistent attacks on Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji raise an important question: why does a man who is repeatedly described by his critics as politically irrelevant continue to command so much attention? If he truly poses no political challenge, why is so much energy devoted to responding to his every move?

The answer, perhaps, lies in the influence he continues to enjoy across the constituency.

As former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji built a political profile that many believe was anchored on accessibility, grassroots engagement and empowerment. Supporters frequently point to initiatives they associate with him, including youth empowerment programmes, business support for small entrepreneurs and investments in community development.

Whether one belongs to the APC, Labour Party, PDP or any other political platform, it is difficult to deny that Chinedum Orji remains one of the most recognisable political figures from Ikwuano/Umuahia.

Politics should never become a battle of insults. Elections should be decided by evidence, not emotion. Candidates should present their achievements, explain their vision and allow voters to make informed choices.

As the 2027 election approaches, I believe the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia will look beyond social media propaganda and political mudslinging. They will ask simple but important questions: Who understands the challenges of the constituency? Who has demonstrated leadership? Who possesses the experience to attract opportunities and speak effectively for the people in Abuja?

These are the questions that matter.

The electorate is wiser today than ever before. Political slogans may dominate headlines for a while, but they rarely determine election outcomes. What ultimately counts is credibility, competence and the confidence of the people.

For me, the conversation should no longer be about who can write the harshest statement or launch the fiercest attack. It should be about who can provide the strongest representation.

When the ballots are eventually cast in 2027, it will not be propaganda that decides the outcome. It will be the judgment of the people, a judgment based on performance, trust and the hope of a better future for Ikwuano/Umuahia.
