The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the establishment of five new academic programs in the College of Management Sciences (COLMAS) at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The approved programs include a BSc. in Accounting, a BSc. in Marketing, a BSc. in Banking and Finance, a BSc. in Business Administration, and a BSc. in Economics.
According to a letter signed by Abubakar M. Girei, Acting Director of Academic Planning at the NUC, the Executive Secretary granted this approval after reviewing a report from a team of experts who verified the university’s human and material resources for the proposed programs. The new programs are set to commence in the 2024/2025 academic session.

This development marks a significant milestone for the university, which was previously directed by the Federal Government in 2016 to remove programs that were not part of its original academic mandate. Although the university complied with this directive, it argued that the affected programs were related to agriculture and would assist farmers in understanding the management aspects of their harvests.
Dr. Ubadire Agua, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the university, commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, for his dedication and commitment to transforming the university into an entrepreneurial agricultural institution.
