The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has taken decisive steps at its meeting held on Thursday, May 2, 2025, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja. The Council reviewed various internal matters, notably the alleged anti-party activities of Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and other members, leading to the establishment of a disciplinary committee.

The five-member committee is chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, with Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim serving as secretary. Other members include Barr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Barr. Callistus Ihejiagwa. The committee has been given two weeks to submit its findings.

The NEC also affirmed the legitimacy of its 2024 National Convention held in Nnewi on March 27, 2024, confirming compliance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN), the Electoral Act of 2022, the party’s constitution, and INEC regulations. It also ratified the list of ad-hoc delegates elected across the 36 states and the FCT, as approved at a previous NEC meeting in Asaba on March 20, 2024.

In a show of unity, the Council reiterated its support for the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC), expressing confidence in its leadership and capacity to guide the party to success in the 2027 general elections.

NEC commended the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025 ruling, which affirmed the primacy of political party structures and upheld decisions made by validly convened party organs.

Emphasizing reconciliation, NEC extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, calling for peace and unity within the party. However, it firmly declared that the Labour Party will not join any political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, choosing instead to focus on strengthening its base and internal structures.

The Council also congratulated Chief George Moghalu on his emergence as the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election following the April 5 primaries in Awka. It called on all members and residents of Anambra to support his candidacy ahead of the November 8, 2025 poll.

The communiqué was signed by National Chairman Barr. Julius Abure and National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim.
