As Nigeria joined the global community to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2025, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FNIPR, reiterated the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to upholding press freedom as a fundamental pillar of democracy.
Speaking on the theme “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” the Minister acknowledged the growing influence of AI in media and stressed the need for a balanced approach that safeguards both innovation and ethical journalism.
“The Tinubu Administration remains deeply committed to upholding press freedom,” Idris declared. “A free and responsible media is the lifeblood of any democratic society, it gives citizens the power to express themselves freely and hold leaders accountable.”

To reinforce this commitment, Idris revealed that the Federal Government is developing a national policy framework for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the media. This initiative aims to ensure that technological advancements do not compromise ethics, press freedom, or national security.
The Minister also warned of the dangers posed by AI-driven misinformation, deepfakes, and disinformation campaigns, which he said threaten social harmony and democratic values. He called on media organisations to remain vigilant and to resist being used as platforms for subversive elements and anti-state actors.
“As gatekeepers of truth, the media must protect the information ecosystem from being polluted by manipulated content,” Idris stated. “Granting extremists access to the public sphere without scrutiny undermines national security and erodes public trust.”
He called for collaboration among the government, media, and civil society to protect freedom of expression while harnessing technology to uphold democratic ideals.
The Minister concluded by extending his greetings to all media professionals in Nigeria, urging them to continue upholding the highest standards of journalism.
Many critics of the government have faced repercussions for their views. For instance, Daniel Ojukwu from the Foundation for Investigative Journalism was arrested in 2024 after publishing a report on financial mismanagement by senior government officials. Additionally, Henry Nwodo, an activist with the Take It Back Movement, was arrested in January 2025 for protesting against police impunity. Many others remain incarcerated for criticizing the government.
