The Abia State House of Assembly has passed the Abia State Primary and Secondary School Education Reform Bill (H.A.B. 26), marking a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to modernizing and strengthening its educational system.

Sponsored by Hon. Anthony Chinasa, representing Umuahia Central State Constituency, the bill was passed after months of extensive legislative work and stakeholder engagement. The law is expected to take effect from June 3, 2025, pending assent by Governor Dr. Alex C. Otti.

Described as a transformative piece of legislation, the bill aims to overhaul the state’s primary and secondary school systems through several key reforms.

These include the modernization of school infrastructure, the establishment of minimum standards for facilities, science laboratories, and digital learning tools, and the introduction of inclusive education policies for children with special needs.

“This is a momentous achievement for Abia State and a clear indication of our commitment to providing world-class education for every child,” Hon. Chinasa stated. “We are not just improving education we are laying the foundation for a prosperous future for our children.”

Other provisions of the bill include robust teacher training and retention programs, curriculum enhancement to include 21st-century skills, STEM, and entrepreneurship education, as well as transparent governance structures involving parents, teachers, and community leaders.

It also introduces sustainable funding frameworks to ensure consistent investment in education.
