Hon. Atu Terver Joseph, Principal Special Assistant to the Governor of Benue State on Youth and Media Mobilization, has dismissed his Chief of Staff, Mr John Ukeyima, and Chief Press Secretary, Mr Lubem Terkula, for participating in a protest against the recent killings in the state.

In a letter dated June 14, 2025, Terver accused the two aides of working against the state government by joining the demonstration.  The letter stated:

“This letter serves as formal notification of your immediate and indefinite suspension from your position as Chief of Staff and Chief Press Secretary, effective today, June 14, 2025. Such conduct is a serious breach of your duties and the trust placed in your office.”

Demonstrators gathered at the Wurukum roundabout to demand an end to the persistent attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen, which have resulted in numerous deaths and displacements in the region especially the recent attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 people were killed, intensified public outrage.

The dismissal of Ukeyima and Terkula has sparked controversy, with critics alleging that the action reflects the government’s intolerance toward dissent and its failure to address the security concerns of its citizens.  Supporters of the aides argue that their participation in the protest was a demonstration of solidarity with the affected communities and a call for urgent government intervention.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has yet to publicly comment on the dismissals. The incident has further fueled tensions in the state, with many questioning the government’s commitment to addressing the escalating insecurity.
