NAFDAC Issues Public Alert on Counterfeit Herceptin Cancer Drug Possibly Sourced from Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued Public Alert No. 22/2025 warning the public about the confirmed circulation of counterfeit Herceptin® 600mg/5ml (Trastuzumab Solution for Injection) in Ghana. The falsified cancer drug, reportedly purchased in Nigeria, was discovered at a hospital in Kumasi, Ghana.

Herceptin is a critical medication used in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer. The counterfeit product bears the batch number A8519, which Roche, the original manufacturer, has confirmed does not exist in its production or distribution records.
According to NAFDAC, the counterfeit Herceptin® exhibits several discrepancies from the genuine product, including:

Invalid Batch Number: A8519 is not recognized by Roche.
Packaging Irregularities: Noticeable inconsistencies in font type, misplaced label text, and incorrect tamper-evident seals that do not align with Roche’s authentic packaging standards.
NAFDAC is urging healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or potentially falsified Herceptin® or other medical products. Reports can be made at the nearest NAFDAC office, by calling the toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
