Tinubu Arrives in Brazil for State Visit, Set to Deepen Nigeria-Brazil Ties
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Brasília, Brazil, on Monday to commence a state visit aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s bilateral and economic relations with the South American nation.

The President, who flew in from Los Angeles, was received at the Brasília Air Base by senior Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, was also present at the reception.
Upon arrival at his hotel, President Tinubu was welcomed by other ministers, heads of key government agencies, and members of the private sector who were expected to participate in a series of high-level engagements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) signings during the visit.
An official welcoming ceremony with full military honours is scheduled to take place at the Planalto Palace, where President Tinubu will meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The leaders will hold private talks followed by expanded bilateral meetings and a joint press conference.
President Tinubu’s itinerary also includes meetings with the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court. He will also attend the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum in Brasília.
Nigeria and Brazil have maintained strong diplomatic ties since the 1960s, with Brazil being the only Latin American country to participate in Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960. Nigeria opened its embassy in Brazil in 1966.
The visit builds on a series of recent high-level exchanges between both nations. President Tinubu previously attended the G20 Summit in Brazil in 2024 and the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro in July 2025. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin of Brazil also visited Nigeria in June 2025 for the Second Session of the Mechanism for Strategic Dialogue.
That dialogue, co-chaired by the Vice Presidents of both countries, resulted in the signing of seven MoUs across various sectors, including defence, energy, tourism, livestock development, and counternarcotics.
Brazil remains a strategic partner in Nigeria’s food security efforts, notably through the $2.5 billion JBS investment agreement signed during the 2024 G20 Summit. Another key project is the Green Imperative Programme (GIP), a $1.1 billion agricultural mechanisation initiative aimed at boosting local food production through the supply of 10,000 tractors and 50,000 farm equipment units assembled in Nigeria.
President Tinubu’s visit is expected to further solidify bilateral cooperation in agriculture, trade, energy, and infrastructure development.
