Obi Decries Rising Insecurity, Says Nigerians Deserve Better Protection

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Peter Obi, has raised an alarm over the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria, warning that the growing normalisation of violence and abductions threatens the very fabric of the nation.

In a statement titled “The Reality of Insecurity in Today’s Nigeria,” Obi lamented that Nigeria has entered a dangerous phase where abductions, killings, and violent attacks have become daily occurrences. He noted that this disturbing trend is eroding the value of human life in the country.

“A nation cannot grow or prosper when its citizens live in perpetual fear. It is now as though the lives of Nigerians do not matter,” Obi stated. “What is the value of the life of one Nigerian, when hundreds are kidnapped and killed daily without a national emergency on insecurity?”

He condemned the silence and perceived inaction of the government in the face of repeated violence, saying that such silence diminishes the dignity of every citizen.

“When a government remains silent in the face of constant bloodshed, it diminishes the dignity of every single citizen. The first duty of leadership is to protect life,” Obi said. “Until we place the highest premium on the safety of every Nigerian, we cannot claim to be building a nation.”

He emphasised the need for immediate and strategic action to safeguard lives and property across the country, insisting that peace must become the norm, not an occasional occurrence.

“Our people deserve a country where peace is not an option but the standard,” Obi declared. “Nigerians will not accept insecurity as their fate.”

Reaffirming his belief in a better future for the country, Obi stated that “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
