Enough of Wike’s Reckless Intoxication with Power – Otunba Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo

The attention of well-meaning Nigerians has once again been drawn to the conduct of the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose attitude in public office has become nothing short of a national embarrassment.

Instead of carrying himself with the humility, decency, and responsibility befitting a minister of the Federal Republic, Wike has chosen the path of arrogance, drunkenness, and tout-like behaviour. He now parades himself as though he were a generalissimo, forgetting that Nigeria is governed by democratic principles and not by his personal whims.

His lack of constructive speech and his continuous display of recklessness paint the picture of a man who sees himself as a god in public office. Such an approach to leadership is unacceptable in a nation yearning for progress, stability, and respect for the rule of law.

More worrisome is the deafening silence of our media houses, television stations, newspapers, and press outlets, who appear to have chosen compromise over conscience. Are we to believe that financial inducements are enough to buy their silence in the face of this glaring abuse of office? The press, traditionally regarded as the watchdog of democracy, cannot afford to be silent while tyranny is being dressed up as governance.

This act must stop. Nigeria belongs to all of us and no individual, no matter the office he occupies, has the right to reduce public service to a stage of intimidation and arrogance. We call on civil society, the media, and citizens of conscience to condemn these disheartening acts and demand accountability from the FCT Minister.

Public office is a sacred trust not a platform for drunken arrogance or a display of power intoxication. It is time to remind Nyesom Wike that he is a servant of the people, not their overlord.

Enough is enough.
