Reckless Politics Threaten Nigeria’s Stability, Ogah Warns Politicians

Former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uche Ogah, has issued a strong warning to Nigerian politicians over what he described as reckless political behaviour, urging them to act with restraint and responsibility to safeguard the nation’s stability and democratic progress.

In a statement, Dr Ogah cautioned against divisive rhetoric, vote-buying, and actions that could overheat the political climate, stressing that leadership is a call to serve and not an avenue for personal gain.

“Leadership is not about self-enrichment or personal ambition. It is about service to the people,” he stated, emphasising the urgent need for politicians to focus on unity and national development rather than political brinkmanship.

Dr Ogah decried the growing trend of monetisation in Nigeria’s electoral process, warning that vote-buying and the manipulation of delegates erode the credibility of elections and rob citizens of their right to choose competent leaders.

“When politics becomes excessively commercialised, the ordinary citizens are robbed of their right to choose credible leaders,” he said.

He also condemned the exploitation of Nigerian youths for political thuggery, urging leaders to mentor and empower young people rather than using them as tools for violence and disruption.

“Youths are the future of this nation. They deserve empowerment, not manipulation,” Dr Ogah stated.

On the tone of political discourse, the former minister spoke against the use of hate speech, fake news, and propaganda, noting that such tactics mislead the public and generate unnecessary tension.

He advocated for issue-based campaigns rooted in constructive criticism, tolerance, and democratic values. According to him, campaigns should aim to strengthen the political culture, not divide the electorate.

Dr Ogah also warned against turning national security challenges into political weapons, noting that insecurity should be addressed collaboratively and not exploited for electoral advantage.

“Insecurity must never be politicised. Leaders at all levels should work together to restore peace, stability, and the safety of all Nigerians,” he said.

He urged political actors to prioritise long-term development and inclusive governance over short-term political gains. According to Dr Ogah, true leadership lies in service that uplifts both urban and rural communities.

“Our democracy can only thrive when leaders put the people first,” he added.
