Tinubu Defends Reforms, Jabs Atiku Over Privatisation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised opposition figures, particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, over past privatisation policies while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to economic reforms and national unity.

Speaking during a meeting with the 36 state coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu questioned the legacy of privatisation efforts led by Atiku, who once chaired Nigeria’s privatisation council.
He pointed to key national assets, including the Delta Steel Company and the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, asking whether they are functioning effectively today.
“They privatised the steel industry in Delta, is it working today? They privatised Ajaokuta, is it working today?” the president said, in a pointed critique of the opposition’s track record.
Tinubu also took a swipe at what he described as inconsistent political behaviour among coalition leaders, adding that some had even attempted to “privatise another man’s political party.”
Defending his administration’s performance, the president said ongoing infrastructure projects and economic policies deserve recognition. He accused critics of refusing to acknowledge progress, remarking that his government would “loan them sight-correcting glasses” if necessary.
Despite the sharp political tone, Tinubu emphasised the importance of democratic institutions and national cohesion.
He called for respect for the judiciary, regardless of outcomes, and underscored the need for unity in building the country.
“We must embrace the judiciary, whether it favours us or not. We submit to this principle of democracy, the separation of powers, and the nationhood that Nigeria represents,” he said.
“There’s no other path to national greatness than building one nation with a common vision for progress and prosperity.”
At the meeting, the president also announced the appointment of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as the Renewed Hope Ambassador, a move seen as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots mobilisation for his administration’s agenda.
Tinubu reiterated his resolve to remain steadfast in the face of political opposition, dismissing attempts to intimidate him.
“They want to scare me off; it’s a lie. I have been through this path before, and if I have to come back over and over again, I will do the same thing,” he said. “There is no better place than your own country, and no one can build it except you.”
