Just-in: Fake Police Officer Arrested for Extortion

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, for impersonating a police officer and extorting unsuspecting members of the public in the Kofar Dawanau area of the state.

Shitu, a resident of Kofar Waika Quarters, was apprehended around 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2025, while dressed in what appeared to be a police uniform. His arrest followed multiple reports of extortion activities allegedly carried out by individuals posing as law enforcement officers in the area.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, preliminary investigations confirmed that Shitu is neither a police officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary. He had been masquerading as an officer to defraud members of the public.

“The suspect will be charged in court for prosecution,” the statement read. “Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of his criminal activities and to identify any possible accomplices.”

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has urged residents who may have been victims or possess relevant information to contact the command via the emergency number 07038188127.

The police assured the public of their continued commitment to protecting lives and property, stating that impersonation and related criminal acts will not be tolerated.

“We remain committed to taking proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of all residents in the state,” the statement added.
