Kwara Government Debunks Claims of Bandits in Control of Nine LGAs, Faults Obi’s Assertion
The Kwara State Government has strongly denied viral reports claiming that nine local government areas (LGAs) in the state are under siege by bandits, describing the allegations as “totally false” and “reckless.”

In a statement on Monday, Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, said no part of the state is currently overrun by criminal elements, contrary to circulating narratives on social media.
“We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by bandits. This is totally false. No local government area is under siege in the state,” the statement read.
While acknowledging security challenges in “a few areas,” the government said these incidents are being exaggerated by opposition figures, whom it accused of spreading panic and misinformation.
“We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these elements are the online promoters and equivalent of bandits as they help to instil fear in the populace through fake news,” Olukoju said.
The statement also took aim at former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr Peter Obi, accusing him of using his social media platforms to amplify the “unfounded claim.”
“We regretfully observe that Mr Peter Obi has lent his social media handles to spreading such fake news. This is not expected from him as a statesman,” it said, urging him to delete the post.
The government further warned the public against sharing unverified information that could create fear, panic, and confusion among residents.
“This irresponsible behaviour is making things harder for the security forces who already have enough on their plates,” the statement added.
