NUC Authorizes Commencement of MBBS, LLB, and Doctor of Pharmacy Programmes at Amadeus University
The National University Commission (NUC) has granted Amadeus University, Amizi, approval to commence Medical and Surgery (MBBS), Law (LLB), and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D) programmes starting from the 2025/2026 academic session.

This was made known by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Samuel M. Nzotta, during a press conference on Thursday, ahead of the university’s 2nd matriculation ceremony scheduled for February 28. He stated that these three programmes bring the total number of courses offered to 22 across seven faculties.
“We have admitted 92 undergraduates, although only 82 have completed the admission process and have begun lectures, so we are expecting the rest.”
Prof. Nzotta attributed the university’s success to the governing council and management, who have worked tirelessly. He explained that NUC’s authorisation is the initial step towards full accreditation. Highlighting Nigeria’s many universities, he mentioned the challenge of attracting students but reassured that the university remains focused on addressing the obstacles in the education system. He also revealed that the university has implemented a robust Quality Assurance Standard to ensure that academic standards align with NUC benchmarks, industry standards, and global best practices.
He emphasised that the university is dedicated to maintaining standards that will accelerate research processes and outcomes, while ensuring they are institutionalised to attract funding. He said that disciplinary measures are reinforced through orientation to maintain standards and to ensure that corrupt vices like cultism are totally eschewed.
“The students are made to tow the line through the Student body to ensure that they don’t deviate. Cultism and other vices are deeply discouraged, and we are trying to ensure that doesn’t happen in the University.”
Prof. Nzotta also noted that both human and material resources have been developed, which was crucial for the approval of the new programmes. He added that the university infrastructure is top-notch and mentioned that the University established a General Studies and Entrepreneurship Development Centre on campus with the aim of impacting various skills and Vocational training to students. He said the focus is to train students on soft skills and entrepreneurship development to make the students job creators and not job seekers on graduation.
“Before we graduate the first medical doctors, we will have a well-equipped hospital as we are working on it.”
He stated that the university aims to produce readily employable graduates. This is why their curriculum was meticulously aligned with the NUC Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), with continuous reviews across various programmes.
On collaboration, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned partnerships with the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia; Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia; Topfaith University, Mkpatak; and the Education Collaborative — a continent-wide network of higher institutions led by Ashesi University, Ghana for student training across different fields.
Contributing, Librarian Professor Ukachi Blessing stated that Amadeus University stands out for its peaceful environment, internet-enabled smart classrooms, and digital learning tools.
“The idea here is that, when students are being taught and there’s a glitch, a video is pulled out and shown for better understanding. We are a digital university. Some people will say ‘technology is where we are going’, but in Amadeus University, we are already there. On graduation, these students are already equipped for the market. We also have exchange programmes to enable our students to gain exposure outside and see what is happening outside Nigeria or within the country.”
She further mentioned that both academic and non-academic staff are highly qualified, with 60% of lecturers being Professors, well paid to ensure dedication.
“There’s no other university that provides the comfort that Amadeus University provides to its students.”
During a tour of the university’s E-Library, Professor Ukachi Blessing said it can be accessed from anywhere in the world. She highlighted that it is open to the public and that they also offer computer lending services.
“We have laptops that we lend to students to use in their hostels, as some students may not have a personal computer.”
In his closing remarks, the co-chairman of the university’s Publicity Committee and a lecturer in the Mass Communication Department, Sir Anyaso Anyaso, thanked the press for honouring the invitation and encouraged all to register their wards at the university for quality education.
Highlight of the event was the facility tour led by Nella Francis, team leader and welcome/information manager. The tour included various facilities such as the Allied Medical Faculty, Cadaver Room, Nursing/Medical Demo Room, Ndukwe Hall (named after the family that donated 11 plots of land), the police station for extra security, the hostel, laundry mart, cafeteria, hospital, and other facilities.
Also present were the Registrar, Mr O. E. Onuoha; Bursar, Mr Augustine Ugorji; and other members of the University council.
