Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has said his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor was not driven by any political rift with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but by unresolved internal challenges within the party.

Speaking on recent political developments with Arise TV’s Charles Aniagolu in an exclusive conversation on the 2027 elections and the NDC’s chances at the polls, following its decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South, Kwankwaso stated that both leaders chose to distance themselves from the ADC after concluding that the party was facing issues that were difficult to resolve.

“Peter Obi and I decided to leave ADC, not because we are fighting Atiku. We decided to leave ADC because the party was facing some issues difficult to resolve,” he said.

Kwankwaso also reflected on his political experience during the 2015 general election, revealing that he and his supporters delivered nearly two million votes for former President Muhammadu Buhari but were not adequately recognised afterwards.

According to him, the experience contributed to his decision to pursue a new political direction and intensified his call for national change.

The former governor disclosed that he later met with northern political leaders to identify a credible candidate capable of leading the country, adding that Peter Obi emerged as the preferred choice.

“I met with our leadership in the North to look for someone capable, and we realised that Peter Obi was at the forefront of it. That’s why we’re working together,” Kwankwaso stated.

He further described Obi as a man of integrity, dismissing concerns about regional divisions and stressing that the former Anambra State governor had no history of hostility toward northerners.
