Debtors Rejoice Over Death of Popular Money Lender, ‘Old Warri’

The death of renowned money lender, Mr. Vincent Onoriode Akpovughaire, popularly known as Old Warri, has sparked mixed reactions across Delta State and beyond with many of his debtors openly celebrating his passing.

Mr. Akpovughaire, who was widely known for his aggressive lending practices and significant financial reach, allegedly held onto clients’ properties, personal documents, and even controlled access to their bank accounts as collateral for loans amounting to hundreds of millions of naira.

In the wake of his death, some debtors have wasted no time in vowing to reclaim assets previously tied to unpaid loans. One such individual, speaking to friends, threatened to “break the head” of anyone who attempts to stop him from taking back his landed property used as collateral.

Another debtor, employed by one of the international oil companies (IOCs), lamented how Old Warri had allegedly controlled his salary for the past six months, leaving him with only meagre funds. “With his death now, my salary will finally be mine,” he said.

Despite the shock his death brought to many in the financial and business community, Old Warri’s former debtors have vowed not to repay their outstanding debts to his surviving family members.
