Court Orders Release of Man Unlawfully Arrested by DCP Abba Kyari

A Federal High Court sitting in Gudu District, Abuja, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force to immediately release one Jude Chuks Obasi and pay him N5 million for “gross violation” of his rights.

Obasi was said to have been arrested and detained for more than nine months by the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, when he led the IGP Intelligence Response Team.

The lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, announced in a statement on Thursday.

Ejiofor further disclosed that the court also ordered the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to tender an unreserved apology to Obasi in two national dailies.

According to the IPOB’s lawyer, Obasi has been kept in solitary confinement since he was abducted at the wee hours of the night from his residence at Nnewi on 31 March 2021.
Ejiofor revealed that Obasi was detained and denied access to his lawyers, relatives and family members.

Also, the lawyer in a chat disclosed that the police “never showed up in court throughout the proceedings despite being served with all the originating processes and Hearing Notices in the case.”

The rest of the statement read, “The court further ordered the IGP and its Intelligence Response Team to immediately tender an unreserved apology in two National Dailies to Mr Jude Chuks Obasi.

“The court consequently awarded the sum of N5,000,000 as reparation for the gross violation of the Fundamental Rights of Mr Obasi.”

Ejiofor assured that the legal shall activate all the machinery of the law to ensure that this judgement is obeyed to the letter and most promptly.

“There is no hiding place for a golden fish. This is an Order of the Court and it must be obeyed, and terms stipulated thereat must also be complied with in full.

“We return all glory and adoration to the Almighty ChukwuOkike Abiama for this feat, as we are still sojourning in this special month of uncommon victory,” he added.
