Imo State Police Command confirmed the kidnap of John Ugorji, the owner of Johnny Supermarket and Pharmacy Ikenegbu in Owerri, Imo state, last Friday.
Speaking in Owerri on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, explained that there was swift action when a distress call was made to the command but unfortunately, the man has been kidnapped when it reached the scene.
It was gathered that the kidnappers shot erratically into the air when the victim resisted the attempt to kidnap him. An act that scared residents away from the scene.
However, the PPRO maintained that a discreet investigation was ongoing to rescue the victim and called for more vigilance in the State.
Chief Ugorji, who hails from Umueshi Community in the Ideato-South Local Government Area of Imo and is said to be one of the foremost operators of supermarkets in Owerri was driving home on Friday around 10 pm to 11 pm when the incident happened.
He was trying to run away but his tyres got stuck in a gutter so the kidnappers pulled him out of his vehicle and bundled him into theirs and zoomed off to an unknown destination.
Meanwhile, they are yet to make contact with the family.
