“Put Nigeria First or Step Aside,” Ogah to Political Leaders on Democracy Day
“Put Nigeria First or Step Aside,” Dr. Uche Ogah Tells Political Leaders on Democracy Day

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day in remembrance of the historic June 12, 1993 election, renowned industrialist and political leader, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, has issued a strong call to political leaders, urging them to place national interest above personal ambition or vacate their positions.
In a powerful Democracy Day message released under the banner of the Abia Rejoice Movement, Dr. Ogah reflected on the significance of June 12 as a symbol of Nigeria’s enduring pursuit of justice, equity, and democratic ideals. He described the day as “a mirror through which Nigeria must continually assess the strength and sincerity of her democratic journey.”
Recalling the landmark 1993 election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, Dr. Ogah paid tribute to the presumed winner, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, whose annulled mandate became a rallying point for democratic resistance and eventual civilian rule in 1999.

“Let June 12 remind us,” Dr. Ogah said, “that the true power of democracy lies not in the corridors of power, but in the collective will and voice of the people.”
He criticized the self-serving tendencies of some political leaders, warning that the country cannot move forward if those in positions of authority continue to prioritize personal gain over public service. “Leaders must put Nigeria first or step aside,” he declared.
Dr. Ogah emphasized that Democracy Day should not be reduced to a ceremonial event but should serve as a moment of national reflection and recommitment to unity, justice, and democratic values. He also called on Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and regional divisions, urging a renewed focus on building a united and progressive nation.
“Happy Democracy Day, fellow citizens,” he concluded, reaffirming his commitment to a Nigeria that truly belongs to all.
