Tinubu: ‘The Worst Is Over’ – President Says Painful Reforms Are Bearing Fruit in Independence Day Address
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his Independence Day address marking Nigeria’s 65th anniversary, declared that the nation has “turned the corner” after enduring months of economic hardship spurred by bold and controversial reforms.

Speaking to Nigerians on Wednesday morning, Tinubu acknowledged the tough choices made since his administration took office, emphasising that they were necessary to rescue the country from decades of fiscal mismanagement and economic decline.
“Upon assuming office, our administration inherited a near-collapsed economy. We chose the path of reform. We chose the path of tomorrow over the comfort of today,” the President said in his national broadcast.
Tinubu pointed to the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates as key policy moves that disrupted entrenched rent-seeking systems. According to him, these actions have allowed for a more equitable distribution of national wealth and provided governments at all levels with increased resources to improve infrastructure and deliver essential services.
“We ended the corrupt fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates. Our administration has redirected the economy towards a more inclusive path,” he stated. “Federal, state, and local governments now have more resources to take care of the people.”
Highlighting his government’s priorities, the President listed investments in education, healthcare, agriculture, national security, and infrastructure, including roads, electricity, broadband, and social programmes, as key areas of progress.
While acknowledging the current struggles faced by Nigerians, Tinubu assured citizens that signs of relief are emerging. “I am pleased to report that we have finally turned the corner. The worst is over, I say. Yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief,” he said, commending Nigerians for their patience, resilience, and support.
The President also called for a renewed sense of national purpose, urging citizens to plan for future generations and continue building a stronger nation.
“As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us remember the sacrifice, devotion, and grand dream of a strong, prosperous, and united Nigeria that will lead Africa and be the beacon of light to the rest of the world,” he concluded.
