Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Abia Chapter, Holds 2nd Annual Conference and Induction with Call for Stronger Broadcast Chain and Responsible Media Practice
The 2nd Annual Conference and Induction Ceremony of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), Abia State Chapter, commenced with a pre-induction training, emphasising the importance of a well-functioning broadcast chain noting that without such a system, content delivery would be fragmented, unreliable, and inaccessible to large portions of the population, describing it as the backbone of modern media infrastructure.
In her welcome address, the Chairman of SNB, Mrs Chinezerem Agbakuru, reiterated that the mission and vision of the organisation are to serve as the primary advocacy body for the broadcast industry in Nigeria and to establish and uphold standards of knowledge, training, and experience in the art, science, and techniques of broadcasting. These standards, she said, apply to the various grades of membership within the society.
Mrs Agbakuru reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to upholding integrity, promoting development-oriented broadcasting, and advancing credible media practice in Abia State and Nigeria at large. She urged new inductees to carry the torch of responsible broadcasting with pride and conviction.
Delivering the first lecture, the former Director-General of the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA), Sir Anyaso Anyaso, underscored the need for thorough audience research on every programme aired. He advised broadcasters to determine whether their programmes are audience pullers, as such insights help in making advertising and programming decisions. According to him, a proactive station should go beyond airing content to assess its impact and audience engagement.
Sir Anyaso stressed that content creation involving writers, producers, and directors must be carefully vetted before approval for broadcast. He outlined the broadcast process chain, covering:
Production and Post-Production: Involving the use of cameras, microphones, video editing, and sound systems.
Broadcast Centre Operations: Managing sound and media within the control room, ensuring compliance with NBC regulations.
Transmission: Delivering processed signals via terrestrial transmitters, satellite uplinks, or internet servers.
Reception: Audiences receiving content through TVs, radios, or smartphones.
Monetisation and Analytics: Tracking engagement and listenership to inform strategy and revenue.
He reminded broadcasters that every presentation should educate as well as entertain, and must be capable of marketing the station effectively.
Contributing to the training, Mr Gregory Odiakosa, Deputy Director of Programmes, FRCN South-East Zone, speaking on “Production Technique,” described a producer as an ‘idea man’ and visionary who generates concepts, structures them, and determines what goes on air.
Representing the President of SNB, Prof. Umar Pate, the National Vice President (Southeast Zone), Sir Chimdi Oluoha, spoke on the difference between newspaper and broadcast journalism. He noted that while people often turn to newspapers for detailed information, broadcasters must strive to be good writers, crafting their scripts in a conversational and engaging tone without compromising on information quality.
Sir Oluoha encouraged broadcasters to invite guests to their programmes to make them more interactive, entertaining, and informative.
The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate members whose birthdays fell within the period.
