Obi Slams NFF as Super Eagles Boycott Training in Morocco over Outstanding Payments

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has condemned the treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, calling it “truly unfortunate” that players who consistently give their best for the nation are being owed allowances.

“It is truly unfortunate that our Super Eagles, who consistently give their best in representing our dear nation, are being owed their allowances,” Obi wrote on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

“We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag, bring us pride, and serve with dedication. That is what is found in a now disgraced country.”

Obi added that neglecting athletes sends the wrong message to Nigerian youth, discouraging hard work and national service.

“When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to our youth that hard work and service are not rewarded. Those who represent Nigeria deserve to be paid promptly and treated with respect. We must do better. A New Nigeria is POssible,” he stated.

The condemnation comes as the Super Eagles boycotted training in Morocco yesterday, ahead of their 2026 playoffs scheduled for Thursday. Sources within the camp revealed that players refused to train because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments.

Meanwhile, William Troost Ekong, the Captain of the Super Eagles stated that the team will let Nigerians know once the issues regarding outstanding payments are resolved.

“Once a resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm.

Any other statement or claim, especially those that demand more than the rightful request written below, is false.

All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead.”

Nigeria is set to play against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
