Development without Accountability is an Illusion – Otunba Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo

Nigeria is once again confronted with a painful reminder of how far we still have to go in the struggle for justice, accountability, and true democracy. The reported detention of a whistleblower by the Nigerian Police for exposing alleged corruption involving the Tinubu‑linked Alpha‑Beta firm is not just an attack on one individual it is an attack on the conscience of our nation.

When citizens who speak up against corruption are hunted, detained, and threatened with arraignment, while those accused of looting public resources walk free and enjoy state protection, then the moral foundation of the state has been deeply shaken. This pattern sends a dangerous message: that truth is a crime, honesty is a liability, and power is above the law. No society can progress under such conditions.

Whistleblowers are not criminals. They are patriots. They are men and women who choose country over comfort, integrity over silence, and justice over fear. In many countries that are serious about fighting corruption, whistleblowers are protected by law, celebrated for their courage, and supported by institutions. In Nigeria, however, they are too often treated as enemies of the state, while corruption itself is treated as a mere inconvenience.

It is deeply troubling that law enforcement agencies, which should exist to protect citizens and uphold justice, are increasingly perceived as tools for silencing dissent and shielding the powerful. The police should be investigating the substance of the allegations against Alpha‑Beta and any individuals or interests connected to it, not rushing to detain the person who raised the alarm. Justice that only flows in one direction is not justice at all.

This issue goes beyond politics or personalities. It is about the kind of Nigeria we want to build. Do we want a country where public funds are treated as private property? A country where loyalty to powerful individuals matters more than loyalty to the constitution? A country where young people learn that the safest path is silence, not truth? If that is the Nigeria we accept, then we should not be surprised by our underdevelopment, insecurity, and mass poverty.

Corruption is not an abstract concept. It is the reason our hospitals lack equipment, our schools are underfunded, our roads are death traps, and our youths are unemployed and frustrated. Every stolen naira is a stolen opportunity, a stolen future, and in many cases, a stolen life. Anyone who exposes corruption is, in effect, fighting for the survival and dignity of ordinary Nigerians.

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, like any government that claims legitimacy, has a responsibility to demonstrate through actions, not words—that no one is above the law. This means allowing transparent, independent investigations into allegations of corruption, regardless of who is involved. It also means ending the harassment, intimidation, and prosecution of whistleblowers and critics.

Nigeria cannot continue on this path of selective justice and expect different results. History has shown us, again and again, that societies that suppress truth eventually collapse under the weight of their own lies. Stability built on fear is temporary. Peace enforced by intimidation is fragile. Development without accountability is an illusion.

All this has to stop if we truly want a better Nigeria. We must demand a country where the rule of law is supreme, where institutions are stronger than individuals, and where courage is rewarded, not punished. Nigerians from all walks of life civil society, the media, professionals, students, and the diaspora must speak out consistently and peacefully against this injustice.

Silence is no longer an option. Today it is one whistleblower; tomorrow it could be any citizen who dares to ask questions or demand transparency. The future of Nigeria depends on our collective willingness to stand up for what is right, even when it is uncomfortable. A better Nigeria is possible, but only if truth is protected, corruption is confronted, and justice is allowed to prevail.
