The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Danladi Isa, has reiterated that the death of Ikenna Onuoha, a staff member at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, was a suicide and not homicide.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference on Thursday, he stated that it was a case of job racketeering, as the staff member had taken money from some individuals to assist with employment, and when he couldn’t meet the demand, he sent a message to his wife and took his own life.

“We obtained the evidence and when we investigated, we found out that it was a case of job racketeering. The evidence is there.”

Furthermore, the CP revealed that there has been relative peace in the state and disclosed that nine cultists were arrested on Wednesday to help curb the menace.

“We are not resting, we have taken the fight to their enclaves. We have 13 cases of cultism and are investigating 23 suspects,” he added.

The police chief mentioned that the week was special for the force due to National Police Day. He explained that the activities commenced with environmental and free medical services for the public on Monday, followed by a Workathon.

“The week is meant to give the police the opportunity to engage with the people of the country, an opportunity to build trust and confidence. Because if people do not trust you, they won’t cooperate with you.”

The police also honoured the families of fallen officers by providing welfare packages, part of the IGP’s initiative to support their families, which includes an IGP welfare package valued at over 11,900,000 naira.

Additionally, the police chief noted that out of 1,500 candidates, 771 have been screened so far in the ongoing recruitment exercise, and he urged more people to join the force.
