The former Chief Security Officer of late Gen. Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has stated that Abacha foresaw what will happen in Nigeria and chose to stabilize it’s a foreign reserve.
Al-Mustapha stated that he met only $200m in it’s a foreign reserve and chose to revamp and stabilize the failing economy of the country by increasing its foreign reserve to $9bn before his demise.
While speaking at the 22nd commemoration of Abacha’s death in Kano, on Monday, Mustapha insisted that Abacha transformed the country to an enviable height.
He maintained that during the regime of the late Head of State, one dollar was sold at only N85, adding that there was no inflation despite all the problems and challenges confronting the government, then.
According to the former presidential aide: “What Abacha has done to Nigeria can’t be forgotten in the annals of history and generations yet unborn.
“Abacha came in and found only N200m dollars in the foreign reserve but before his demise was able to revamp the economy and stabilise it to the extent that he saved over $9bn in foreign reserves.
“Only God will reward General Sani Abacha for the laudable initiative he made in transforming this country to an enviable height.”
Getting the figure that was looted might be very difficult but Transparency International once stated that the late Head of State might have looted up to $5bn between 1993 and 1999 when he died but figures recovered from subsequent administration have proved this figure wrong.
