The House of Representatives has passed a bill to acknowledge the existence of independent candidacy for Presidential, Governorship, National Assembly, House of Assembly and Local Government council elections in the country.
This was made known during Tuesday’s plenary which was presided by the Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila. It also enhanced the provisions for the formation of political parties in the country.
“A Bill For an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the FRN, 1999 to provide for independent candidacy in Presidential, Governorship, National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly and Local Government Councils elections;and for related matters.
“A Bill For An Act to alter the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to enhance existing provisions on the formation of political Parties; and for related matters.”
This bill provides that aspirants can contest elections without being a part of any political party.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Electoral Amendment Bill 2022 last week while the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced that the 2023 presidential election will be on the 23rd of February 2023.
