Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi has charged the federal government to be active in mitigating the effect of the flooding for the displaced and affected in many communities and States in the country.
The former governor of Anambra State stated that with the flooding witnessed in the country, it is now clear that climate change is real and is no respecter of status or wealth.
“This year’s flooding proves that climate change is real. Rise in temperature, rise in ocean levels, excessive rains, are all indicative of climatic changes. The poor, the well to do and the rich are affected alike.
President Goodluck Jonathan’s country home was affected, as was the entire Otueke community. While FGN cannot control the rains, it should take proactive measures to ameliorate the ravages of flooding; and even when they occur as is now the case, expeditious humanitarian intervention measures should be deployed to support the affected and displaced. -PO”
Mr Obi called off his campaign to visit the flooding communities in Benue, Rivers, Anambra, Bayelsa and other States and donated to these communities while calling on other Presidential candidates to postpone campaigns for the sake of Nigerians in flooded communities.
