Obi Condemns “Double Standards” in Ibom Air Incident, Demands Justice for All
Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has issued a strong statement condemning what he described as “double standards” and “dehumanising treatment” in the recent controversy involving an altercation aboard an Ibom Air flight.
Obi’s remarks come in response to the viral incident where a female passenger, identified as Miss Comfort Emmanson, was reportedly assaulted and later publicly stripped by security operatives after allegedly confronting airline staff. While expressing sympathy and issuing an apology to the Ibom Air crew, Obi criticised the excessive response by authorities against the young woman.
“I must equally strongly condemn the dehumanising treatment meted out to this young woman. Stripping her publicly was not only unnecessary but also represents the height of rascality and abuse by our agencies,” Obi said.
He further criticised the speed with which Emmanson was arrested, arraigned, and remanded, contrasting her treatment with that of another unnamed individual who recently delayed a flight’s departure without facing similar legal repercussions.
“This case is not just about one young woman; it is about the double standards that poison our justice system,” Obi stated. “Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials.”
Obi pointed out the broader implications of the incident, especially in a country where high-ranking individuals often escape punishment for more egregious offences, such as corruption and abuse of office.
“This young lady’s offence does not compare to the crimes committed daily by those parading themselves as ‘excellencies’ while looting public funds without consequence,” he added. “And yet they have not been stripped or dehumanised in the name of justice.”
Calling on the Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities to provide answers, Obi demanded transparency and fairness in handling justice, particularly in a democratic society.
“We must end this selective treatment of the poor or less privileged,” Obi said. “If justice must be served, it should be served to all, and it must be served fairly. Justice must be just, or it is nothing at all.”
He called for upholding the rule of law, insisting that justice and equality before the law must remain the foundation of Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.
“A new Nigeria is POssible,” he affirmed.
