Senate Moves to Adopt 112 as Nigeria’s Unified Emergency Number
The Senate has proposed the adoption of 112 as a single, nationwide emergency number for Nigerians to call or text when seeking urgent assistance.

Leading debate on the bill, Senator Abdulaziz Yaradua said the current system, where various government agencies operate multiple emergency lines, creates confusion and slows down response times during crises.
He noted that the fragmented emergency communication structure has been a major impediment to achieving swift, coordinated action when citizens require urgent help.
Senator Yaradua explained that the proposed number, 112, is simple, easy to memorise, and quick to dial, making it more effective for use during emergencies when time is critical.
The bill seeks to streamline emergency reporting nationwide and enhance the efficiency of response agencies.
