Maiduguri Bomb Blasts: Police Confirm 23 Killed, 108 Injured
The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State has confirmed that 23 people were killed and 108 others injured following multiple explosions that rocked Maiduguri on Monday evening.

The attacks, which occurred at about 7:24 p.m., were described by authorities as coordinated suicide bombings targeting crowded and strategic locations across the city. Affected sites included the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover in Maiduguri.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, preliminary investigations indicated that the explosions were carried out by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Security sources say the near-simultaneous nature of the attacks across multiple locations points to a high level of coordination, raising concerns about evolving tactics by insurgent groups aiming to undermine ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria’s North-East.
The selection of targets, a major market, a hospital vicinity, and a busy flyover suggests an intent to inflict maximum casualties, instil fear among residents, and disrupt economic and social activities in the state capital.
In response, a combined team of police tactical units, military personnel, and other joint security operatives were swiftly deployed to the affected areas. The locations were secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted sweep operations to ensure no additional explosive devices were present.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, led a high-level assessment visit to the blast sites, where he commiserated with victims and their families. He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that enhanced security measures have been activated across the state.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, worked alongside medical teams to evacuate victims to hospitals, where they are receiving treatment.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy, with increased security presence across Maiduguri and surrounding areas. Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
The police also commended the resilience and cooperation of residents, reiterating their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
